Unbelievable: 7/3-4/2010
We know a lot of you may have taken the chance this holiday weekend to get out of town and do some summer adventuring. Here’s a recap of what we talked about this weekend and some ways you might connect to God this week:
This weekend we looked at one of the wilder stories in Scripture. In Mark 9.2-8, Jesus takes three of his followers on a little trip up a mountain and they get a chance to see him in a different light. Mark can barely describe the moment. While they’re up there, Jesus even talks to Moses and Elijah who have been long gone for a long time. Are we ready to believe all things really are possible with God? Are we ready to believe that forgiveness, and restoration, and salvation really are possible?
We also talked this weekend about how there are things about God, life and faith that are clear and that ring true deep down inside us.
And along the way, there are also mysteries, the parts that don’t make as much sense as we wish they did.
Think of your own understanding of God. What parts make sense? What can you see clearly? What does the Gospel help you understand?
What feels confusing? Make a list of questions. Pray over your questions. Come up with some ways to explore possible answers to your questions.
Hold on for dear life to the things that make sense.
And let go of your sense of “sense.”
If you want to get fancy with it, Thomas Aquinas believed that we could know the truth through reason (natural revelations) and faith (supernatural revelations).
Where have you seen or heard from God naturally, or supernaturally?
Spend time this week reading the first chapter of Genesis. Scholars and scientists spend a lot of energy trying to understand what this chapter means. But as you read it this week, read it with wonder.
If you need to be reminded of what it looks like to follow Jesus, go back and read the book of Mark—it’s the shortest Gospel and it's action-packed!
Also, we mentioned this week that a place we care about, Monterrey, Mexico, home of Back2Back ministries, was in the path of Hurricane Alex. For more info on their ministry and how they are trying to love people and serve people in the midst of a storm, go to their website right here.
In case you didn’t get a chance to see any fireworks this weekend, here’s some made out of candy:
