Smoke and Mirrors or the Real Deal?: 6/26-27/2010
I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but it’s summertime. And summer was built for adventure.
Summer begs you to go outside, to try new things, to take on the world.
Maybe this is the summer when you take some chances....maybe this is a summer when you risk something. It’s one thing to be brave enough to ride a new roller coaster at Kings Island but it’s a whole other thing to step out in faith.
Jesus says this in John 10.10: “I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.”
This summer, maybe there are some ways you can change your perspective and experience a fuller life.
-Travel purposefully: As you drive through the city of Dayton or take a walk around the place you live, pray for the places you pass: the schools, the hospitals, the neighborhoods. Pray for the kingdom to come on earth as it is in heaven.
-Party purposefully: As you barbecue with friends or throw backyard parties, have intentional conversations. Try asking people “Where do you want to be in 150 years?” Find ways to ask people what’s really going on in their lives and be ready to listen.
-Reminisce purposefully: As you experience childhood nostalgia brought on by summer, revisit some specific childhood memory—maybe even literally. As you remember, think about what God has brought you through so far.
-Play purposefully: As you enjoy the company of your friends or look for stuff to do with your kids, appreciate that God wants to see you enjoy life. Do something you’ve never done before… just because. Ever hear of geocaching? No? Then go try it.
-Rest purposefully: When the sun gets too hot and the days feel long, don’t do anything. And let that be OK. Revisit some of the things we talked about during “The Proximity Factor” series—take a break from television or the world wide web. Just be quiet for awhile and see what happens.
And if you need some motivation to live a little more adventurously and to make the most of the days ahead, watch this Francis Chan clip:
